I think I'll go to Boston (and Maine)

For Memorial Day weekend, Chris, his Mom, my Mom, and I went to Boston, with a day trip to Maine.  We had a blast even though the song "Boston" by Augustana was stuck in my head for weeks before and after the trip.  The only words I know are "I think I'll go to Boston.  I think I'll start a new life. Yeah Yeah."

We arrived on Friday and spent the afternoon exploring the history and architecture around our hotel.

For dinner, we celebrated Chris's Mom's birthday with awesome Italian food.

On Saturday, we took a train to Portland, Maine, where we rented a car for a day of adventure.  We visited Babb's Covered Bridge, Five Islands, and the Portland Head Lighthouse.

Beautiful Maine
We ate a BIG lobster dinner in Portland before heading back to the train station.  Our day trip to Maine was my favorite part of the trip.  Maine is BEAUTIFUL, and I'd love to go back there one day!

On Sunday, we took the subway to Fenway Park for a tour of the park.  We barely made it in time, and I'm so glad we made it.  The tour guide was so enthusiastic about the Red Sox and Fenway Park.  We even got to walk on the field.

After the baseball park, we went to Harvard.  It is such a pretty campus, and it brought back fond memories of dorm life and the Louisiana Tech campus.  Next, we ate lunch at Cheers, which temporarily changed the song stuck in my head to the Cheers theme... a song that I also only know a few lines of the lyrics.  Then, we walked across the street to Boston Common, a big city park.  We saw a one-man band who was quite good.  My Dad loved one-man bands for some reason, so that was fun to see.  As a Memorial Day display in Boston Common, there was a sea of flags in memory of soldiers from Massachusetts killed in battle.  As our last "tourist-y" event for the day, we took a Boston Harbor Cruise.

We were up and at 'em bright and early on Monday to see some of the historical sights along the Freedom Trail.  If you go to Boston, it's the thing you must do to remind yourself how passionate early settlers were about our freedom.  Our first stop along the Train was Paul Revere's house.  It was amazing to see that a house built hundreds of years ago is still standing.  Next we visited the Old North Church, the Old State House, and Quincy Market.  Later that day, we took a trolley ride around the city and learned all about the unit of measurement called a Smoot while passing MIT.

That night Chris and I tested our photography skills by creating light trails.  We got some definite duds for pictures, but one of the photos was a winner.

We had a great time.  Our Mom's got to know each other a little better, and we got to see so many things in a short time.  Maybe in a few years, we can go back to the Northeast and explore Maine a little more.
