A song I sang in church choir as a child keeps popping in to my head - "well it might look kind of nice, but you'll have to build it twice, so you'll have to build your house once more"
Last Tuesday, my husband called me on my way home to say, "umm... uhh... I don't want you to freak out or anything, but our house is flooded." I could tell when I answered the phone that he wasn't calling to tell me good news, but I was relieved when he said that our house flooded instead of saying that there was a problem with a loved one.
Once I got home though, the reality sank in that it would be a little while before our lives were back to normal. The insurance company immediately sent a water extraction team to our home. They worked in to the night ... until the police showed up. Our ever-so-kind neighbors called the police to complain about the noise of the water pumps, so the team worked for another hour before having to shut down. The good news is that having the police called to my house does give me some street cred. The bad news is that had they been allowed to continue with water removal, we would have less damage to our baseboards, walls, and paint - thanks neighbors.
Since that day, we have been living in a hotel and dealing with the insurance company. It seems as if we will be going through a restoring/remodeling period of about 6 weeks, give or take a few weeks. Thankfully, our insurance is providing the means to make all of the repairs and to temporarily house us until we can return home. Hopefully, we can return home before Christmas.
We are blessed to have insurance to cover all of the damages and out-of-pocket expenses. We are blessed that it was clean tap water and not dirty water. We are blessed to have eachother. :)
